2023 SPRINGS HILL VINEYARD MATARO

Single Vineyard Mataro, fruit sourced from ‘Springs Hill Vineyard’, Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale grown by the Whaite family

Dry Grown on Holocene Sand, North-East/South-West aspect 190-200m altitude. Planted 2001. Sustainable Winegrowing Australia Certified Vineyard.

A long admired part of Springs Hill, this tiny plot of Mataro certainly is a welcome addition to our stable and one we are both very excited about. A quiet plodder is Mataro, often blended but exceptional in its own right. This site shows the darkness Mataro often exhibits but with a lovely ‘Springs Hill’ savouriness as well.

Hand-picked fruit, gently destemmed and wild-fermented in open fermenter following a 5 day cold soak. Gentle plunging throughout ferment, 11 days on skins. Wine was matured on lees for 10 months in old French oak puncheons.

Blueberry, blood plums, fresh road tar & black spices with almost a walnut like aroma. Its alert and fresh, some meat & purple florals, carrying a lively black fruit acidity with an inherent savouriness and firm true delivery of tannin. A real joy working with this fruit and seeing its results.
